So I made these custom LPS knock-offs in college...

Postby jillrose » Wed Feb 18, 2015 11:39 am

I majored in Graphic Design & Fine Arts in college. One of my favorite courses was 3D design. I recently unearthed one of the projects that I did for that class: toy prototypes. These "Parcel Pets" were clearly designed as LPS knock-offs

Here are the 3 sets that I made. Each set folds up into a self-contained parcel box.

Remove the lid, open up...

The parcel unfolds into a base playmat.

All the artwork on these was created in Adobe Illustrator, and I printed it on laser paper before painstakingly spray-mounting it to cardboard and cutting/folding it into the parcel shapes.

Here is the bunny set, all unfolded. All the pieces fit inside the folded parcel. The bunnies are custom-painted Li'l Litters extras that I had from various Ebay lots. I made their accessories out of Sculpey dough, and I asked my mom to sew the little pillow for them :)

This is the front side of the box tag; I think I may have originally tied it on with strong of something since there's a hole in it.

Description side of the tag. This artwork was also created in Illustrator, printed on laser paper, and adhered to cardstock.

This was the mini-brochure that I designed; there was a copy of this inside each of the 3 parcels. So, not only did I have to design all these; I also had to photograph everything afterward in order to put photos into the brochure!

This is the base for the puppy set

Full puppy set. They came with newspaper (not unlike our favorite toy line, wink-wink ;) ) and a doghouse fashioned from cardboard. The entire house can be folder up and fit inside the parcel. The roof has little cardboard tabs so that it stays in place on the cardboard walls. The house, too, was made from printed designs on laser paper, mounted to the cardboard.

Base for the kitty set. The right side is supposed to show a porch stoop with railing; it's not as easy to decipher since I could not get the cardboard to lay flat. It has literally been folded up for about 8 years!

Here is the full kitty set. Their litterbox has sandpaper as litter (thanks to my dad for letting me raid his supply). The heart-thing is the hang-toy for their scratching post; at one point it was attached. I need to fix it still :P Credit once again to my mom for that awesome floral pillow.

And finally, the trifecta! All the bases, when lined up, create a continuous yard.

Hopefully one day soon, I will have space to keep these sets on display :) I am wondering if anyone knows a good gloss coat that I can use on everything (both the babies and the accessories)? Has anyone ever worked with acrylic medium gloss? If so, would you recommend it? :)

I love the idea of the parcel opening into the play mat.

This should totally be a thing. I think they'd be a hit.
