Reproduction Mail Order Turtle and Grey Dog

Postby TequilaMockingbird » Wed Oct 22, 2014 6:05 pm

I finally finished reproducing the mail order turtle and grey dog. Since it doesn't seem like they were ever actually produced I decided to make them myself :D I used acrylic paint for these. I'm just not sure about what to do next. Should I seal them with something to make them shiny like the real LPS? Could I use a coat of nail polish? Or should I leave them as is? The ones in the original photos seem like they are just paint anyway. Any suggestions? Also, does the turtle shell of the original look more metallic? Its hard to really make it out in the grainy photo...

I would suggest acrylic gloss topcoat. Also, I do not think the turtle was metallic - just light hitting at the right angle to make him appear shiny :)

Great work, by the way!!!

Thanks Jill! Do you have a brand you recommend?

For the acrylic gloss topcoat, I'd say head to Utretch or Michael's for a recommendation :) I have a jar of the stuff, but sadly, have yet to try it out - so I cannot really make a recommendation for that :( But if you opt for nail polish, definitely Seche Vite; it dried nice and fast, so you are not left with a sticky mess!

They look great! The top coat I use is called triple thick. It comes in a jar, or a bottle the size of a regular paint bottle.

Those are really cute. Way to take initiative on making them yourself.
